How to calculate futures profit
For a long trade: gross profit = (exit price − entry price) × dollar value per point × contracts. For a short trade, reverse the price subtraction. Net profit subtracts commissions, fees and any extra slippage allowance.
Costs here cover both sides: commission × 2 × contracts, plus slippage ticks × 2 × tick value × contracts. A negative result means a loss. Fractional slippage ticks can represent an average planning allowance.
MNQ example: a 25-point move
Buy two MNQ contracts at 20,000 and sell at 20,025. At $2 per point, gross profit is $100. With $0.75 per side per contract in fees, total fees are $3 and net profit is $97 before any extra slippage.
Can a winning trade have a net loss?
Yes. A small favorable price move can earn less than its commissions and slippage. Enter realistic fees to compare the gross and net result.
